I have always been drawn to the intersections between medicine and the humanities. I completed graduate work in literature before becoming a PA and have consistently found meaningful connections with the humanities in my work in emergency medicine and as a faculty member within the SMPH.
I think that my training in interpreting literature provided me with skills to listen to my patients, do the detective work to solve problems, and create shared plans to ease suffering and move towards wellness. Humanities-based training provides skill development in each of these areas, as attention to detail, appreciation and understanding of historical context, and clear communication, are fundamental to these disciplines.
While the work of medicine happens through the physical exam, interpreting lab tests and imaging studies, and applying scientific concepts to address illness, the experience of medicine happens through story; the patient trying to make sense of how their body is feeling and the provider seeking to better understand that experience to provide comfort and treatment. When we recognize how our own story connects to those of our patients, that is where we can find meaning in what we do. This has been central to my work in the ED and is one of the lessons I strive to impart to my students.
