The Dr. Norman Fost Award for the Best Medical Student Bioethics Essay Contest — sponsored by the School of Medicine and Public Health and its Department of Medical History and Bioethics — invites medical students annually to critically examine an aspect of the field of bioethics that is relevant to their studies.
John J Frey, III, MD Writing Awards
The John J. Frey, III, MD Writing Awards recognize and honor creative writing by faculty, residents, fellows, FMIG students, and staff in the UW SMPH Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (DFMCH), UW Health Family Medicine clinics, and those in our academic partner family medicine residency programs (Aurora, Gunderson, Waukesha, and WiNC). The awards are presented at the annual Farley-Frey event.

American College of Emergency Physicians
The Section of Medical Humanities invites ACEP, EMRA, and CORD members to submit up to two original, non-scientific creative works for the annual Writing Awards, covering both poetry and prose. Additionally, the Visual Arts Award offers a platform for members to showcase digital files of their original artwork, such as photography, paintings, or sculptures, for evaluation by the Section. Annual call in Fall.
American Osler Society
Founded in 1970, the American Osler Society honors the legacy of “great and wise physician” William Osler through its commitment to literature, science, action, and integrity. The organization preserves Osler’s teachings by promoting a deep respect for the history of medicine and the humanity required of its practitioners. Members strive to embody the personal equanimity Osler championed, balancing professional success with humility and facing life’s challenges with courage.
American Society for Bioethics and Humanities
The American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) presents four primary honors: the Lifetime Achievement Award for individual excellence, the Distinguished Service Award for member leadership, the Cornerstone Award for institutional contributions, and the Student Paper Award for outstanding scholarship. These awards recognize influential work, leadership, and research that significantly advance the fields of bioethics and the health humanities.
Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes
The Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes is a global forum that strengthens the work of humanities centers and institutes through advocacy, grant-making, and inclusive collaboration. CHCI advances cross-institutional partnerships, recognizes regional humanities cultures, and mobilizes the collective capacity of the humanities to engage the most pressing issues in society today.
William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition (NEOMED)
Founded in 1982 by Drs. Martin Kohn and Delese Wear, the NEOMED competition honors the legacy of physician-poet William Carlos Williams by inviting medical students to submit original poetry. This nationally renowned contest, endorsed by Williams’ son and judged by the Wick Poetry Center, awards monetary prizes and offers winners the opportunity to publish and present their work alongside esteemed guest speakers.
